Great El Paso Eclipse

In 2017 we had the opportunity to travel to Casper, Wyoming to view the Great American Eclipse. That solar eclipse will probably be in the top 5 greatest events of my life. It is definitely an experience that is hard to put to words. You just have to experience it. You may think, “Oh well we’ve all seen pictures,” but there’s more to the experience. Nature gets confused and animals start going home, and quieting down. It starts getting cooler. Then once the moment hits that the sun is completely blocked out and you are able to stare directly back. It is surreal. The hardest thing to capture in a photo is the size, and the color. Think of when you see a full moon and how big it looks, especially as it is first rising. That is how big the eclipse looks. Also cameras usually catch it as mostly black and white, simply because that’s how cameras work, bright spots start washing out color. In person, the sky turns the color of dusk, a deep blue sky, but with a 360 color of sunset/sunrise in the horizon. So the inspiration behind this painting is to have experienced the eclipse in El Paso. but also a mixture of how we experienced it in Wyoming, in the middle of a forest.
